GARY J TUNNICLIFFE - TUNNICLIFFE SFX
aka 'The Hollywood Assassin'
Born and Raised near Lichfield, Staffordshire in the UK, obsessed with film as a child, rode motorcycles, practiced martial arts, sang and acted from an early age and was offered several opportunities to pursue drama school, but instead (after entering the field of opthalmics) decided to 'self teach' himself and pursue the burgeoning field of special make up effects in the late 1980's
Started work for Christopher (The Elephant Man, Phantom of the Opera ) Tucker and then worked as make up effects crew, artist and eventually supervisor for 3 years at Pinewood Studios ( @ Bob Keen's Image Animation) before moving to Los Angeles at age 25 to start a new make up fx company.
Two Hours in the Dark Inc operated in the San Fernando Valley for almost 20 years, in a 4000 sq ft facility with (at times) over 20 crew, working on over 100 feature films including some of the most famous horror franchises including Hellraiser, Candyman, Exorcist, Scream, Halloween, Mimic, Dracula, Pulse, Prophecy, Feast, the Collector, Children of the Corn, , Wishmaster and Pumpkinhead etc (it was during this time he garnered the nickname 'the hollywood assassin' from a well known producer for his ability to craft interesting 'death's on camera) Mainstream projects included tenures on Gone Girl, When the bough breaks, Miracles From Heaven, Sleepy Hollow, Scary Movie 5, Blade as well as virtually every film for Director Patrick Lussier (since they first met in 2000) including Dracula 2000, Dracula Ascension, Dracula Legacy, White Noise 2, My Bloody Valentine 3D, Drive Angry, Trick , Play Dead and Aftermath
After writing and Directing (and doing the make up fx) for critically acclaimed Hellraiser: Judgment (2018) he left California, semi retiring from film industry to concentrate of family and art projects.
Returned to Los Angeles when a chance encounter introduced him to VINCENT VAN DYKE and his top tier make up effects studio, an encounter that would lead to an incredible friendship and working for this talented young effects designer and his Burbank based crew on such projects as
DARK HARVEST EXORCIST BELEIVER THE BROTHERS SUN PICARD and (the hotly anticipated) SPIDER NOIR
Now, permanently back in Los Angeles, with a studio in Northridge (just a few miles from Hollywood) Tunnicliffe Design creates special make up effects as needed, but will also be a 'design tank' for concept pieces, promotional builds, gaming projects and art of all shapes and sizes.
